A Place for Modern Art

Inspired by nature, Boxed by history

A unique combination of beauty, ingenuity, and enjoyment is planned for Gausta Toppen. It is one of Norway’s highest and best-located ski resorts. We have designed the Ice Cube lodges to inspire and improve the construction of mountain residences. These residences provide perfect 360-degree views of the beautiful Arctic scenery during all seasons, including comfort and luxuries such as hot tubes, sauna, cinema, stove, ski storage, and indoor parking.

History and Concept

We want to develop something extraordinary. These warm and cosy lodges provide year-round enjoyment to recharge and connect with nature between Gausta’s lake and ski slopes. The Ice Cube lodges also form a tribute to the heroes from Telemark for the harsh Norwegian winter and dangerous conditions during WWII 80 years ago. The lodges look like massively stacked ice cubes from the outside, with large windows that resemble mirrors to reflect Gausta’s perfect scenery, with a blink to the Sun mirror project in Rjukan. These lodges must be grouped into
Semi-detached buildings in a particular area. The large windows also excite families, artists and photographers during their stays. The best 360-degree views of Gausta’s Artic scenery and watching a movie are found in the Ice Cubes.

Technologies and Luxury

These prefabricated lodges are equipped with all the necessary luxuries. The construction, furniture, installations, and appliances can be completed and installed within six months. This is attractive for winter (snow) locations because the building season can be limited and challenging. This semi-detached concept needs to be prefab manufactured for 75% and can be transported with four trucks based on container sizes to many remote and harsh winter locations. Because the concept is based on pre-fab by modern manufacturing standards, the lodges can be easily copied to other high-end snow areas in Scandinavia, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, etc., which makes it scalable and not limited to a one-off project!  The Ice Cubes’ flexibility is due to their containerised technology and lightweight foundations. This means the lodges can be moved temporarily or permanently to other locations, even by helicopter, if necessary. Building the ice cubes autonomously is possible regarding power, water, and energy supply. We also don’t forget local knowledge and skills. We need local contractors for foundations and handicrafts to finish the complete building 100%, based on widely used local stones, wood, and design standards.
